Chapter Books

Chapter books are great for children between 7 and 12. This is transition period into more complex stories, language, and ideas. The chapters are natural breaks in the story to help readers tackle advanced topics. The beauty of chapter books is they give young readers a natural cliffhanger, engaging them to want to get to the end but providing the breaks needed. Check out some of our favorites. This Newberry Honor Book is a personal favorite of mine from when I was a child. I was introduced to this book by my school librarian. She was absolutely right, I loved it! It is the perfect adventure every child dreams up. Alone on a ship with a mutinous crew, high seas, and long voyage. Not every young lady is brought to trial and convicted of murder. I won't spoil it, but it is a must read for an adventurer.

This is a classic. I've always thought the story was a modern twist to Cinderella. Expect instead of studying, Matilda's parents wanted her to watch tv and be lazy. But she just wants to read and go to school. Of course, when they send her to school, she gets the TRUNCHBULL! This book is for every kid who loves to get lost in books, wants to triumph over bullies and find their own happy ending. Add a little magic and it's a winner!

Encanto: A Tale of Three Sisters

I loved this movie so I was super excited to find the book. This is probably the first time, I have read the book after watching the movie. It is not 100% like the movie, which I think Makes it even more interesting to read. I love that you get to experience the point of view of each sister, it gives more depth to the characters. The writing for each point of view fits the character, so you truly feel like you're getting to know each sister. The text is purple which is unique and adds to the flare of the story.

Boxcar Children Series

As a fan of book series, this is my number one chapter book series. I remember the first time I read the first book, it was so foreign to me that kids could make a home out of a boxcar. The ingenuity and humbleness of it truly inspired me. Their adventures just made it better and made me want to read every book. This is perfect for kids who love a good mystery.

Beverly Cleary

Beverly Cleary is a genius at writing books for young readers that make them feel older. In this book a young girl is sent across the country to go to school. The book is very relatable to a tween and helps paint the picture of the struggles and joys coming ahead in high school. This was a favorite of mine and one of the first books I recommend to middle school readers.
